So back in the not so golden days of film cameras. A portrait session would generally consist of 36 or 72 photos (that’s one or two films) and after your session, a week or so later (depending on the development speed of the photographer) they would send you some lovely glossy contact sheets that would consist of all of your frames, often with ones marked that they like.

This wasn’t such a bad thing.

Having something solid in your hands meant you could sit and lay them out and mark the ones you liked, making your selection process easier but with the downside that each shot was often no bigger than a matchbox.

Nowadays, with the digital revolution official taking over, you will find yourself with digital galleries, great for sharing with people, sending to your agent and posting on facebook for peoples opinions, but can often lead to what I like to call photo-flooding.

The idea of a photo session with 700-1000 photos taken may sound appealing, but in reality, no photographer should take that many photos. If nothing else, they will be buying a new camera every year when the shutter wears out, but also no model or client can sit for that long, a photographer should be able to capture something within the first frame, or at least the second. I was guilty of photo-flooding myself when I started with digital, but you soon realise a client can’t cope with a gallery of 500 photos online, and this leads me to one of the biggest drawbacks of internet galleries.

If your Internet speed is slow and you are trying to load lots of pictures, you will end up despising looking at photos of yourself!

But what are the alternatives? Some photographers still print contact sheets from digital sessions, it’s very easy to do, but unless they are printing on a high end photo printer, the quality is no where near as good as the old contact sheets and the cost can add up. Some photographers give you a digital gallery on cd, this you can normally go away with at the end of he session, but depending on what file format they are shooting on, they may need processing into jpegs which can take time.

Bear in mind all these things when booking in for a session with a photographer, the front end of the session may seem attractive, but bear in mind the back end of the shoot that you will have to cope with afterward.

When you book in with Nicholas Dawkes Photography, you will be given access to your own client area, where you can view photos in either contact sheet thumbnail grid, or large size individual, also, with the added function of being able to mark favourites as you go through, making it easier to go back, but also cross reference with your agent to find the ones you are both happy with.

I’m always keen to see know peoples opinions on these matters, so why not leave a comment and tell us what your post session viewing preference is?

Dancer Dale Elstone

I had the pleasure of working with Dancer Dale Elstone in the summer to create some new portfolio photos. Dale has an amazing sense of style, and bought some great ideas to the shoot, he knew exactly the kind of thing he was after, and we worked together to bring those ideas to life…

Dancer and actor Dale Elstone

Not only is Dale a fantastic dancer and full of energy, he has a really versatile look that flowed throughout the session.

We ventured out to a Canal near the studio to capture a bit of atmosphere of a fairly overcast day and creating a great backdrop for the ‘geek chique’ feel of one of Dales outfits.

Thanks Dale for a great session and bring such life and style to the studio!

And now for something, completely different….

VOGUE MAGAZINE COVER COMMERCIAL TEAM BUILDING

Recently, we had a proposal to create a team building activity for 50 people within the field of Photography. We split them into 7 teams and each team was set a photo shoot challenge with the same running theme of recycling, with each member of the team contributed in a different role.

The different roles consisted of a model, a photographer, a set designer, a make-up artist, a stylist and a creative director. The final image was then mocked up, and used as a magazine cover and presented to a panel of judges from the industry who then chose a winner. Can you guess which?

They were using everything recycled from tinfoil and old newspapers to vintage chairs and wooden framing. The day was a great success, oozing with creativity and everyone left with a feeling of satisfaction and recycling goodness!

A few photos from a portfolio session I had with Actress, Model and Dancer Frankie Caviglioli in the studio this week. We had a great afternoon and captured a whole range of different looks for her portfolio, we ended up under bridges, in skate parks and up trees, but that’s why I love shooting portfolios, everyone brings something slightly different and is willing to try new things. Thanks Frankie!

Great session last week with Actress and Dancer Tasha Chance. Tasha bought a load of energy to the studio, was absolutely fab all afternoon, and gorgeous in front of the camera too.

A few photos taken last week in a portfolio session with Dancer Paulo Teixeira, Paulo is a fantastic dancer, very fluid and extremely athletic, I only wish I had half the energy and stamina he has. We capture some really great shots and had a good laugh in the process. Thanks Paulo!

It was my pleasure recently to take a commission from Hyper Agency (www.hyperagency.co.uk) for one of their artists, BeataMaxx.

The biggest part of the puzzle for this shoot was sourcing 20 old TVs for the various shots we had in mind, but with the generous donations, and no thanks to junk yards, we did it.

Maxx is a fantasticly talented video DJ (VJ), to the point that my head wants to implode when I watch him spin his videos.

After a month of building, sanding, late-nights and take away food, the new studio is up and running. Situated in Westbourne Studios, Notting Hill, it is a fantastic place with a really great vibe, the front foyer has a great bar and cafe which serves a great selection of food and drink.

Can’t wait to get stuck in and use the new space, it’s got a great vibe, and i hope people can relax and feel at home here.
